Women-Space launches programme to help women overcome career obstacles
Women-Space is launching the Career Masterclass Programme - a four-week course aimed at helping women develop their careers by addressing the four main obstacles that favour men’s career progression above those of women.
The weekly one-hour webinars will offer tools and techniques to help participants tackle imposter syndrome, break through the glass ceiling and promote their abilities without boasting.
Women-Space CEO Christina Hughes explained the thinking behind the programme’s creation.
“One of the most common experiences that we have throughout life is imposter syndrome - when you feel like a fraud because you doubt your abilities and your right to be in the role you hold.
Invisible barriers to progression also include how women are more likely to be judged on their achievements while men are assessed on their potential. Others are that you have to start proving yourself all over again when you have children.
We will examine these and other issues which negatively impact on women’s career prospects and provide a toolkit of ways to overcome them.”
This online programme begins on Tuesday February 15 and runs for four weeks from 1 – 2pm until March 8. The £100 fee covers all four sessions.

Women-Space Career Masterclass Programme Details
February 15 February 1-2 pm (GMT): The Credibility Gap
It is sad to say that women are seen as less credible leaders and managers than men. In this first session we explore how this credibility gap impacts of women’s careers and how we can we close it.
Tuesday 22 February 1-2 pm (GMT): Feeling Like an Imposter
One of the most common experiences that we have throughout life is imposter syndrome - when you feel like a fraud because you doubt your abilities and your right to be in the role you hold. By exploring the difference between self-confidence and self-esteem, we pay attention to our ‘I’m an imposter’ thoughts and how to handle them.
Tuesday 1 March 1-2 pm (GMT): Glass Ceilings, Sticky Floors and Maternal Walls
Metaphors abound for describing the invisible barriers to women’s progression. These include: how women are more likely to be judged on their achievements and men on their potential; how you have to start proving yourself all over again when you have children; and how the work that many women get engaged in and are deeply passionate about - such as teaching, equalities, diversity and inclusion - carry low status and recognition. The challenge we have to grapple with is - “Where are we best to put our energies and does that fit our personal values?”
Tuesday 8 March 1-2 pm (GMT): The Art of Appropriate Self-Promotion
We know that being successful at work requires us to be seen as both capable and likeable. And it is the likeable part that is problematic for women as, by and large, we are far more accepting of demonstrations of male than female ego. This makes it doubly difficult for women to draw attention to their successes and all-round awesomeness. This session provides a set of techniques which will help you realise the benefits of ‘self-promotion’ while avoiding being seen as shamelessly showing-off.

Three Reasons to Join the Women-Space Career Masterclass Programme
Practical Tools: Each week I will be sharing strategies and approaches that will enable you to tackle the four main ways in which women are held back at work: the credibility gap; feeling like an imposter; glass ceilings, sticky floors and maternal walls; and developing the art of appropriate self-promotion.
Community: You will be part of a small community with a shared passion and concern to push the boundaries that are holding you back. Working collectively, we will be sharing stories, knowledge and experience and providing the extra support to each other that is necessary in times of change.
Motivation: When you are motivated and in your flow you know you can do anything. But motivation can dip for a host of reasons – fear; conflict of values; lack of autonomy or indeed lack of challenge; grief; loneliness; and burnout. Refreshing your love for your job, and with it your agency, can be hard without taking a first step. This programme is your first step – take it and join us.
